Our Chickens

When we moved here in 2018, we inherited chickens and as I’d wanted to raise chickens for some time, I was very happy to take them on. Since then, we have bred and purchased new chickens over the years as well as giving away one of our beautiful roosters to neighbours.

We’ve mainly raised Australorps and Isa Browns as they are good layers. Late 2024 while researching chicken breeders near us so I could increase our flock as well as replace the four older hens we have; I found School House Farm in Verona run by Deborah and Steve Gough. They raise heritage chickens who are both beautiful and functional, and thanks to Deborah’s advice I bought 5 different breed hens and a rooster, who we’ve called Barrie.

We are looking forward to when the new girls start to lay so we can enjoy their eggs (some will be green or blue – very exciting) and enjoy a roast chicken or two from our own property. One step closer to being self-sufficient.

Here are some images of our new flock:

Still can’t decide which of the hens I like best as they are all beautiful with their own unique personalities!
